The name Hsi Lai translated into Chinese means “coming west”, representing the propagation of Buddhism into the Western Hemisphere. Today the temple spreads the teaching of Buddhism through cultural activities, education and charitable programs held at the temple (International Buddhist Progress Society, n.d.).
Arriving at the temple, I immediately felt the change in the atmosphere with that of being humble and peaceful, a kind of atmosphere where material possessions, careers, and the everyday rush against time did not matter. I was surprised to find lots of visitors, with many of them from different age groups and ethnicities. Most were scattered throughout the temple with some taking

Growing up, my family observed Buddhist practices, but the beliefs of Buddhism and that of needing to follow religion was never emphasized. As a child, I participated along side my family in many religious practices. Most of the religious practices were done for the passing of a family member or our ancestors. I recall we would burn, Joss paper or money for the deceased. I remember laying out various fruits and food on a table dedicated to our ancestors along with lighted incense. I recall yearly visits to the temple and receiving blessed Guanyin figures to hang in our cars or rooms for safety. Additionally, I remember when a relative passed away my parents, aunts, and uncles would take turns guarding the body of the deceased, and all the kids would be happy, because it meant we could stay up all

On October 24th I attended the Autumn Festival at The New York Buddhist Church with my fellow classmate, Bianca Rodriguez, located at 331-332 Riverside Drive, New York, New York. The New York Buddhist Church practices the Pure Land and Zen perspective of Buddhism. This church is also supported by specifically the Japanese culture, opposed to the many other Asian cultures who share this perspective. We were at the festival from beginning to end, 12pm-4pm. The outside of the church was very simple.…

I am not converting to Buddhism, but I am really enjoyed learning a new perspective on life. I can apply some of the teachings to my life; such as, focusing on my breath and finding peace with myself. I think this is important because it can be easy to get lost when trying to juggle school, sports, and a social life as teenager. It is crucial to set time aside for yourself to relax. I really did not expect to enjoy my trip to a Buddhist temple to this magnitude.…

I've always loved different cultures and tried to surround myself in as many as possible however I could. This was usually me trying to learn on my own from the internet, music and movies, but I was still missing that X factor that really made me indulge in other cultures. As soon as I walked onto Swarthmore's campus I felt that X factor. Sitting in the info session and taking the tour, I truly felt at home. The small diverse campus allows for people of completely different backgrounds and cultures to have real relationships that they might not have even noticed anywhere else in the world.…

The Joyful Land Kadampa Buddhist center is a constructed place as it is within a building, possibly a former house. At first glance, the space did not seem at all religious. When I entered the center, I was greeted by a lady wrapped in red and yellow sheets, gave me a tour of the center. It was not until I entered the meditation room in which I got a grasp of a sacred space. The room had many chairs in which faced the front of the room.…

Going through small private schools in a little town since I was in kindergarten has set me up for very few cultural experiences but my parents never wanted my siblings and I to grow up like this. When my family goes on vacation my mom always tries to fully submerge us in the culture around us. For example, a few years ago, my family and I went on a vacation in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. We stayed in a nice resort and it was never necessary to leave the property if you didn’t want to. Most people never did.…

Growing up in a Mexican American household, most likely one is to be raised Catholic. Therefore, as a young boy it became ordinary to follow and believe in what my parents instilled in me. Furthermore, I never had the courage to explore any other religion and get a sense of what other religions are about. However, now that I am taking Social Work 461 with Dr. Tillman, one of my assignments is to attend a religious service that is held by a group that is different from mine. As a result, I decided to attend a Buddhist temple to get an insight of what the Buddhist religion is about.…

Although the Hindu followers overseas could take a pilgrimage to visit a guru, there is nothing that offered a home, or desh, in America until the temple was built. This temple is important for the Hindus because it offered an authentic, physical place overseas for which their religion could be practiced and celebrated. This desire for a nostalgic version of their religion stems from the ecological dissonance these groups experience. Both groups find that there is a tension between the environment and the religion they…

Death is one of the most difficult events to overcome, even if a person has a religious belief system. It’s ultimately the scariest turn of events that a person can face, as it can result in losing a best friend, a family member, or the love of your life. The death of someone special is by far the hardest thing to face, so naturally people have believed in their own religion as a form of consolation. For example, Christians believe that when someone dies they simply fall asleep. They will only wake up when Jesus comes again and the deceased to heaven with him.…
