“…all Men are created equal, and endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights,” became the foundation of our independent nation in 1776. Abraham Lincoln reiterated this notion in his Gettysburg Address, stating the famous phrase, “Four score and seven years ago our father brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal,” However, in the 1950s, it wasn’t a rare sight to see separate bathrooms for the further segregation of blacks and whites (History.com Staff “Civil Rights Movement”). If all men are created equal, why was our country and government still struggling with issues of discrimination? With the rise of the Civil Rights Era emerged Martin Luther King, Jr. King has benefitted society by enforcing the notion of peaceful protest, improving educational opportunities for African-Americans, and by fighting to end lawful segregation.

was a powerful figure who has benefitted society by emphasizing non-violent resistance, enhancing academic opportunities available to African-Americans, and working to diminish lawful segregation. By using protesting methods inspired by Gandhi, King was able to voice his ideas without the harm of others. Additionally, by working to pass the Civil Rights Act, he opened up more doors for African-Americans in the world of education due to the elimination of segregation in schools. In addition to ending segregation in schools, King also assisted in the end of lawful discrimination of public spaces, including the work field; which exposed blacks and whites to equal chances in employment.
