How I Relate to The Pearl A parable is a short allegorical story designed to illustrate or teach some truth, religious principle, or moral lesson. The Pearl is a great example is a parable because Kino is used to show how something good can ruin your life. When he finds the “Pearl of the World,” his wife Juana knows that it will make them evil. “But she [Hester] had named the infant “Pearl,” as being of great price, - purchased with all she had, - her mother's only treasure!” writes Nathaniel Hawthorne in the Scarlet Letter about Pearl, the most complex character present in the novel thus far, who continues being seen as a misunderstood child due to her association with her mother and the the child of the scarlet “A”. Hester pays the greatest price in giving birth to Pearl, as she receives a lifelong, physical reminder of her faults. Pearl's presence becomes a symbol of punishment from God for her sins of adultery. In order to prove to herself of Pearl's existence and the reality of her sins, she begins “to snatch her to her bosom, with a close pressure and earnest kisses, - not so much from overflowing love, to assure herself that Pearl was flesh and blood, and not utterly delusive,” (116).…

In Emily Budick’s “Hester’s Skepticism, Hawthorne’s Faith; or, What does a Woman Doubt? Instituting the American Romance Tradition”, she discusses how Hawthorne created the American romance tradition in The Scarlet Letter by breaking down Puritanical control of society through the unknown lineage of Pearl. She states, “In Hawthornean romance, doubt is the condition of our lives in this world. Faith is the willingness to entertain and keep alive our skepticism alongside our commitment to thinking and acting determinately” (Budick 84). In Kino's head there was a song now, clear and soft, and if he had been able to speak of it, he would have called it the Song of the Family” Kino’s very focused and happy with his family, so naturally the Song of Family is a song he regularly hears. Another of example of how Kino was a good man at the beginning of The Pearl is on page 26, "My son will read and open the books, and my son will write and will know writing. And my son will make numbers, and these things will make us free because he will know - he will know and through him we will know. " This shows how Kino did not only think for himself when he found the pearl, he thought of his people. He thought about using the pearl to break the barrier that kept his people…

One major use of symbolism is how the pearl, and its color, changed throughout the story, from when Kino found it to when Kino was on the way home, having killed four people, and his son being shot and killed as well. “He looked into its surface and it was gray and ulcerous… And the pearl was ugly; it was gray, like a malignant growth” (Steinbeck 86). When Kino found the pearl, it was beautiful and magnificent, and he called it the Pearl of the World, though the evil it brought had changed it. As the plot progresses, Hawthorne develops Pearl’s characteristics as though she were an angel sent from heaven. Despite Hester Pryne’s sin and the scarlet letter, the author describes Pearl as wild, but beautiful and imaginative at best. Pearl's character is symbolized by God and the supernatural. Among the community, Pearl is considered a “demon’s child” born out of a guilty passion, but Hawthorne refers to Pearl as a “lovely child […] worthy to have been brought forth in Eden” (Hawthorne 82). He depicts Pearl in this fashion because of her beauty, but this description is ironic considering that she was born out of the affair between Hester and another man.…
