This goes beyond that girl with the nice smelling perfume, or the situation displayed in Axe fragrance commercials where the girls are all over the boy because he smells of their product. Natural pheromones actually cannot consciously be recognized. How does this affect attraction if it is not deliberately known by either person? The answer lies within the brain. Pheromones have been scientifically proven to lead to concepts such asexual attraction and aggression due to neuron reactions so it makes senses as to why humans, like every other animal in nature, place a high importance value on the smell they perceive from their counterpart. According to Roschelle Nelson, “We usually smell best to a person whose genetically based immunity to disease differs most from our own. This could benefit you in the long run, making for stronger, healthier children,” (Nelson). This statement displays the pheromone attraction that leads to more beneficial offspring which is a stable of the theory of Natural Selection and provides a scientific background from the phrase, “opposites attract.” This pheromone-induced attraction could lead, if the conditions are just right, to the immediate magnetism between individuals commonly known as love at first sight. Lust and love are two very different emotions that many confuse together without knowing they have done so. At a first glance appearance is all that is available to the eyes; therefore, it is a major determining factor with first impressions amongst individuals. If a male’s ideal perception of beauty fits the physical attributes of the individual which he is looking at, attraction will occur. If that immediate attraction is strong enough then it will lead to an immense desire to be with them, both in acquaintance and sexually. This sexual desire based upon appearance is prevalent to most mammals, not just humans, and is referred to by Dr. Helen E. Fisher as, “the intolerable neural itch,” (Fisher). The difference between other mammals and humans is that the latter can reason and think leading to the ability to love romantically. Knowing that humans can love romantically, many jump over the fact that the extreme desire they just felt may only be sexual attraction; consequently, they then attribute this desire to love. It this scenario, love is actually lust and the attraction will disappear after the sexual desire has been fulfilled. This is ultimately the most common occurrence with the statement of love at first
