How the Crusades lead Western Europe into the Renaissance By Ravi Cho The Renaissance would not have occurred had it not been for the Crusades or a Crusades like event. The First Crusade took place in 1095 when Pope Leo II declared that it was a Christian believer’s duty to fight for God and to reclaim Jerusalem from the Muslims who occupied it. The Crusades lasted until 1291. One of the greatest and lasting effects that the Crusades had on the Western European region is that it lead to newly established trade relationships with other world powers.…
The Crusades that took place in the medieval period between 1096 and 1291 were a series of political and religious wars fought by European countries in order to gain control of the Holy Land. The first call for a crusade was made by Pope Urban II in order to send aid to the Christian Byzantine Empire, which found itself under attack during this period from Muslim Turks. This first crusade lasted from 1096-1102, with the Christian knights taking control of Jerusalem in 1099. In response to the Christian invasions and their occupation of the Holy City, the Muslim’s retaliated with substantial force, which led to continuous subsequent crusades to maintain control of the Holy land. However in 1291 at the end of the final crusade the Muslims regained control of Jerusalem and the surrounding costal areas, which remained under Islamic control until the twentieth century.…
Religion was pretty big with the Crusades were the Christians, Muslims, and Jews. It was thought that Christianity was to remove the Jews and Muslims, no matter what the price may be. Because of the way that the Crusades portrayed the Christians, society saw them as cruel and cold blooded animals for all of the violence they used against the Jews and Muslims. Not only did they affect Europe, but they also affect society today. If one country is to want something, they will stop at nothing to get what they want, whether it includes violence or not.…
The Roman Catholic Church longing for power over the Byzantium Empire maybe perceived as a major factor that formed the First Crusade, nevertheless the significance of the battle of Manzikert, Pope Urban II’s speech and the supposed threat of the Muslims in Europe are undeniably crucial in the launch of this historical event. By Christians losing a important battle that resulted in more tension with the Islam, and the Pope Urban II creating a damaging, biased image of Muslims people in order to allow and encourage Christians to commit the sin of murder for the sake of God’s wishes, and above all demonizing Islam so Christianity can remain the most powerful religion, thus intensified the already strained relationship between these antithetic religions. Although this isn’t the first conflict between Christianity and Islam, this episode single handily set these two religions on a path towards deep-seated animosity and enduring enmity that would last for centuries. The causes and effects of the First Crusade have greatly impacted the view of Christianity and Islam because one is seen as associated with what is right and moral, whereas the other even today is still pictured as being deviants and corrupt.…

This paper does a excellent job of outlining the Islamic influence that was placed on the Renaissance. All three questions were answered in complete detail and there was plenty of support for the claim made in this paper. The thesis of the paper is clear and accurate. Based off of this paper, one can gather although it wasn’t recognized by everyone, Islamic teaching was the main factor that held up the Renaissance. Gloria moved onto defending her point by defining what the Renaissance was founded on.…
During the era between 500 and 1500, economic and social continuities and changes impacted Western Europe immensely after the fall of Rome, which inspired great change throughout the region, a negative impact known as the Dark Ages. Following the Crusades, the main result was the restoration of commerce, including the economic alteration of decline of feudal manoralism, prevalent in the early medieval era and the rising urbanization offering plebeians greater social flexibility and created innovation. While economic transformations occurred throughout Western Europe, the influence of the Roman Catholic Church was continuous despite fluctuations in its authority. After the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 CE, Western Europe became divided into…
The major difference with the two dynasties is their feelings towards Muslims and non Muslims. Umayyad’s did not like conversions, and so the numbers of Muslims did not increase in the hundred years they ruled. Abbasids accepted non Muslims which led to a large increase in the number of Muslims around the world. The Umayyad was more focused military expansion and wanting to conquer territories but the Abbasids focused on expansion of knowledge.…
Many of the revelations in the Holy Quran came down to provide guidance to Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) and his fellow Muslims based on what they were confronting at that time, including verse 8:12. This verse - along with several ahead of it - were revealed in reference to the Battle of Badr, the first major battle between the muslims and the Meccan pagans around 625 C.E. The pagans of Makkah traveled to Madinah with an army of about 1000, following the prophet (pbuh) once he had fled to Madinah. After the muslims had suffered severe persecutions and torture for 13 years in the city of Makkah they had found a sanctuary in Madinah, they were once again threatened.…
Current misconceptions of Muslim countries today in the West stem from the West’s belittling perceptions and depictions of “the East.” Many scholars’ writings, such as George Hegel, wrote problematic cultural representations of Islamic history based upon fictional, Western images of the “Orient.” Despite Fernand Braudel’s attempts in writing an improved history on Islamic civilization, he still suffers from a significant Hegelian slant that includes Orientalism and Idealism. In contrast, Richard Eaton proposes a new method and vision of studying Islamic history, which consists of using social history and viewing the Muslim world as a global civilization, hence stripping away the European stereotypes of Islam from Braudel’s work and the ongoing…
Sharia, literally “the way,” is the legal code of Islam. Sharia essentially comes from Mohammed’s teachings. Therefore, the development of Sharia began in 610 CE, when Mohammed began prophesizing about Allah. Over the next thousand or so years, as Islam spread throughout the world, Mohammed’s words were written down and interpreted. Over time the teachings and interpretations became official legal documents called the Quran and Sunna, which act similarly to the Torah and Gemara in Jewish tradition.…
