Animal farm is a book that resembles the Russian revolution. It is about animals revolting against the humans only to find out that life is harder than they thought it would be. Amongst the many themes George Orwell explores throughout the book three stand out the most equality, dreams and terror. Equality is the goal of the animals but they never quite attain it. Right at the start of the book we see the terror of Farmer Jones, he forgets to feed the animals and kills them off for produce with little care. When Napoleon finds the puppies he steals them away and raises them as his own with the plan to build up his own personal police force to inflict terror on the animals of the farm. Napoleon first uses the animals to chase off Snowball so the farm is his. This is an allegory of Joseph Stalin getting rid of Leon Trotsky in Russia. Napoleon then uses the dogs to kill off anyone who committed a crime against him. “Immediately the dogs bounded forward, seized four of the pigs by the ear and dragged them squealing in pain and terror to Napoleon's feet…..these were the same four pigs as had protested when Napoleon abolished Sunday meetings.” “ The three hens who had been the ringleaders in the attempted rebellion over the eggs now came forward” It was all of the animals who had committed crimes against Napoleon’s leadership who were slaughtered. This created fear wit in the animals. “The air was heavy with the small of blood… the animals were shaken and miserable.” George Orwell is saying here that after the revolution life was worse than before the revolution.
