Over the years, several people have learned and been taught that Christopher Columbus was the first person to find America. However, America was found by several different people before Christopher Columbus came to what is now known to be called the United States of America. For example, Vikings, Aztecs, and Cherokee Indians were a few of the people that came before Columbus and lived in America. After Christopher Columbus, who was exploring for Spain, told who he was working for what he had discovered and came back with items that could be good for trade, then Spain started to explore America more and more. By the 1500s, Spain ruled the exploration of America.…

One voyage that is brought up in every history class is Columbus “discovering” the New World. It is said that Christopher Columbus founded America, but in reality people have been living in the New World long before Columbus “discovered” it. Columbus’ discovery changed the way the Native Americans and Europeans lived. When Columbus landed in America, he wrote a letter to the King Sanchez and Queen Isabella.…

Christopher Columbus was one of the most influential and impactful explorers the world has ever know. Born in Genoa, Italy in 1451, Columbus had a fierce pride in his Italian heritage. His life was short, and, despite his tragic death on May 20, 1506 in Valladolid, Spain, he accomplished many things. Columbus was granted permission by the Spanish King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to venture on the Atlantic Ocean in hope of seeking an easier route to China. Instead of finding a new route to China, Columbus discovered the New World, America.…

When I was in elementary school, Christopher Columbus was taught to be an adventurous hero who found America. His idea for his pilgrimage was to find a trade route to Asia. He first asked the King John of Portugal and he was quickly denied. When Columbus went to Queen Isabella to ask, he demanded too much if he succeeded in the future and she denied him, until six years later. Columbus was not actually the one to discover America.…

Kenneth C. Davis in the book “Don’t Know Much about Geography” gives clear details of other people who had touched the continent before Columbus. A ship’s bell found in west California and Roman coins found in South America led historians to believe that other people had reach the continent many years before Columbus. Others say that even Egyptians had been in Mexico and had built pyramids there. Other civilizations like the Vikings had even attempted to set up a colony in North America around the year 1000. Today, all historians agree that Columbus wasn’t the first to arrive in…

While many have depicted Columbus as a benevolent explorer who discovered the New World, he wasn't particularly kind, and some think he didn't discover the New World. We now have evidence of many explorers that had reached the Americas before him. Also, he only visited islands near North America. Therefore he never made it to North America. When Columbus landed in 1492, it is estimated there were between 10 and 15 million indigenous people in the area that now constitutes the United States.…

Columbus is often labeled as the person who “discovered” America, but now we know that’s just incorrect. The native american’s already lived there, and the Vikings, with explorers such as Lief Ericson, landed in the Americas long before the Spanish. Columbus did set forth the “age of discovery”, but when you think about it, that's not really much of an achievement on Columbus’ part. People often idolize Columbus and talk about him as if he was the only person who could have landed in America, but that’s a concept that I completely disagree with. I can say with complete certainty that if it wasn’t Columbus who landed in the America’s someone else would have.…

I believe that Europe is credited for discovering a new world for several reasons. Although Columbus wasn’t the first European explorer to reach America, his expeditions enabled the first meaningful contact of Europeans with America. This contact ushered in a period of ventures and the colonization of lands that ended up lasting for hundreds of years. That said, Europe had a profound impact in the modern development of the Western society. Not surprising, Christopher Columbus played a strong role in this accomplishment, and also for the massive dispersal of the Christianity.…

Ancient Maya civilization was an exceptionally sophisticated society located in the Central American nations of Mexico, Belize, Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador. Originating before the year 2000 BCE, Maya civilization thrived as a intelligent and powerful society for over four thousand years until the sixteenth century when Spanish explorers conquered the Maya kingdom and changed the lifestyle of ancient Maya civilization. Luckily, information about ancient Maya civilization can be obtained through archaeological research, ancient Maya documents and relics, and records of Spanish encounters with the Maya. The first European explorers began to colonize America around the same time that Spanish explorers conquered Mexico.…

I feel that China discovered America. I believe China found America because of their cartography showing the Americas before any other nation was close to discovering it. China, therefore, had scouts and cartographers researching the landscape of North and South America. Statues and walls were also found showing Chinese materials as well as sunken junks (Chinese boats). Due to the location of these ships and artifacts, China must have been all over America, from Atlantic to Pacific.…
