In 1949, Dr. Kurt Pfeiffer created the International Charlemagne Prize to recognize those who work to promote European unification. According to its bylaws, it is given to public figures or bodies ‘distinguished by their outstanding work toward European unity or cooperation between its states.’ The contribution, as Kurt Pfeiffer emphasized, can be ‘made in the areas of literature, science, economics or politics.’ The prize quickly developed into a pre-eminently political award. Very little is known of his life, but his accomplishments are famous throughout the world. He was a master of many media and techniques and unsurpassed at innovation. His conceptual genius translated the new interpretations of the gods that were emerging in contemporary Athenian literature into tangible, high classical and visible images. Roman copies of his work were created, and can be viewed to this day in honor of the works that he created so masterfully.It is unfortunate that we are unable to view Phidias’ original works to this day.
