The femoral head functions as biomechanical support for the patient needing a hip implant. The femoral head is Cobalt-Chromium alloy, which is sliver and lustrous. The top portion of the part is half of a hollow sphere, which fits inside of the acetabular cup. Out of the middle of the half sphere, is a short cylindrical stem. The diameter of this piece depends on the size and weight of the patient; it ranges from 38- 58 mm. The femoral head is in figure 2.
