The book Inferno was a very interesting book. It truly showed the poetic side of ancient history. It also conveys many of the system theories but it is more focused on Hierarchy, Trade/Communication, and Political/Social.
In the first part of the book it shows the system of Hierarchy because it goes through all the different social classes and how each of them work. Also, how the people do their own way of running their village. Plus, in this village they have a leader and the leader tells the people what rules to follow and what to believe in. As the book, it says "And to the Master turned; and he made sign That I should quiet stand, and bow before him. Ah! How disdainful he appeared to me!” (Pg. 44, Line 86-89, Canto 4) This quote it showing

Also, in the book it says “To bring a spirit form the circle of Judas; That is the lowest region and the darkest, And farthest form the heaven which circles all. Well know I the way; therefore be reassured.” (pg. 43, line 27-30, Canto 9) this quote is showing the social part of this village because in the quote it is explaining that they follow a religion believe and it is a behavior pattern because the religion is used throughout the entire book, which is cool to see how they do religion back in the day. Along with this other quote from the book “The sepulchers make all the place uneven; So likewise did they there on every side, Saving that there the manner was more bitter;” (pg. 45, line 115-117, Canto 9). In this quote the author is showing the more creative side of the village people and how building sepulchers is a way for people to express their thoughts. Plus, this was a pattern that people were achieving after they found out what kind of tools they needed to make one. In conjunction with this other quote “The ancient poet turned my steps, reflecting Upon that saying, which seemed hostile to me.” (pg. 50, line 122-123, Canto 10) the author is showing that the village people are loving the all the forms an art that are coming out. Feasts have always held cultural and symbolic significance in Western Society particularly in the country of Italy. As early as the Romans, a banquet or convivium(Latin for “living together”), represented not only a social gathering but a measure of taste and status (Raff). Medieval banquets were no exception to this rule. During this time period such banquets were often of religious origin and represented important social gathering (Rouff); therefore, any interruption of social, political, or moral norms relating to hospitality was viewed as particularly alarming in the context of medieval Italy. In Dante’s Inferno, such crimes of deceit in the context of hospitality are designated to the ninth circle of hell, the lowest circle of hell.…

The poet is expressing the ways in which humans make their presence known on the earth and affect the surroundings. I think the poet is possibly speaking to human nature and the people that do what society says they cannot, and that those people are waiting for the time when they too can prosper. In lines eighteen through twenty, the poet says “Man would scythe them down if he could; man would poison them if he could reach so high, but they live, incredibly they live, between the tunnel’s darkness and the sky.” I think this can be directly applied to the fact that humans want control. Whether taken literally to mean that people want control over even the smallest of weeds in the man-made, bustling city they have created, or whether it is interpreted as the desire for people in society to have control over other people, the message is clear: when man lays down the law, obedience is expected.…

The Canterbury Tales, written by Geoffrey Chaucer, is a compiled collection of the tales of 29 people embarking on a pilgrimage. Sins undiscovered or unpunished in life will be eternally punished in death, exemplifying Dante’s view that one should never succumb to Earthly whims. As Dante travels through the concentric circles of hell, he meets many sinners who were heroes on Earth who were lauded in spite of their sins or sinners whose true crimes were never punished. In Canto XXIX, he meets Griffolino d’Arezzo who tells him that “the crime for which [his] flesh/was charred was not the one that brought [him] here” (XXIX. 99-100). D’Arezzo was burnt at the stake for sorcery but is rotting in the final bolgia of Circle 8 for falsification. Despite having been caught and executed for a lesser crime in life, in death he was sent to the true ditch of hell that represented…

The crime of the uncommitted is refusing to accept the burden of faith, yet not straying far from its path; a soul travels the predestined road, yet they refuse its ideology. The Inferno, an ancient epic poem written by Dante Alighieri, describes a journey through the various circles of Hell, but there is one part of Hell that is very briefly described: The Vestibule. The Vestibule is the false home to those labeled “uncommitted”; the lost souls who travel the boundaries of Hell searching for their meaning. In lines 32-48 of Ciardi's translation of the third canto of the Inferno, Virgil explains to Dante that there are two types of people who inhabit the outer ring, the angels of neutrality and the faithless. The text reveals to us that the angels simply refused to partake in the battle between God or Satan, but it fails to shed any light on the second class of inhabitants, thus leaving it up for interpretation.…

What is greed? The most common distinction pertains to a strong and selfish desire for something, such as wealth or power. The question is, what kind of person would intentionally succumb to such a malicious concept? The notion itself appears in countless works of literature, from fiction and non-fiction alike, and stands as an extremely prominent theme that has been featured in countless collected works. However, regardless of its commonality, greed is still a sinful conception that many men and women have submitted to in both literature and life.…

In Cantos XXI-XXII I think that the demons embodie all sins. They look disgustingly proud and vain about torturing and killing souls. They show the sin of a lying tongue, when they lie about the route to get to the 6th ring. They show the sin of hands that shed innocent blood when they kill the bodies and souls of the sinners. Another sin shown is the sin of a heart that deviseth wicked acts when they torture their souls.…

When problems arise in religion and politics, corruption is often found within the issue. For example, in the 1300’s, respected leaders would sell offices of high rank to the highest bidder solely to make a profit. This practice happened frequently, which often lead to a self-serving leaders who made decisions that reflected upon their own self-interests and not for the greater good. This corrupt system upset many who wanted good for their society, including Dante Alighieri, who wrote the epic poem The Inferno. In the epic, Alighieri creates his own structure of Hell and names a protagonist after himself, Dante.…

In the Inferno of Dante, which depicts an allegorical journey through Hell, Dante is guided by Virgil through each canto of sins. As Dante travels through the levels of Hell, parallels between the physical and the spiritual are made. Dante parallels his physical journey into the Inferno with his spiritual journey into the individual. The further Dante travels in Hell is like one getting deeper and lost in his own mind. Desire and lack of the knowledge of truth consumes and destroys us so that we get lost in self and, according to Dante, we stray from God which causes us to lose ourselves, and to get out of such inward focus one must face the truth and become aware of the sins that harm us.…
