The hemp plant, or Cannabis, is what produces a drug that is considered to be one of the most common drugs in the world. “According to the United Nations, 158.8 million people around the world use marijuana—more than 3.8% of the planet’s population.” (Foundation for a Drug-free World, n.d.). Marijuana is is created by the drying of hemp plant’s flowers or leaves.
Marijuana is not considered to be a herbal drug; rather, it is classified in the Cannabinoids group along with Hashish. Studies have shown that more and more young teens are beginning to smoke marijuana. According to the National Kids Count website, in the years 2008-2009, 8% of California’s teens ages 12-17 used marijuana. In Connecticut 10% of teens ages 12-17 smoke, and in Arizona about 7% of teens smoke. To overcome marijuana addictions, many programs first flush out the drug from the body. This may take a while because the drug tends to linger in the body’s fat cells for up to 50 hours or more after use. Many programs like to focus on specific skills that users can use for repairing relationships and reintroducing them back into society. Marijuana often destroys motivation in users and during rehab, focusing on this aspect is very important. There are different rehab programs like Inpatient (patient stays in a facility), Outpatient (patient stays at home), Behavioral Treatments (behavioral therapy), and Medications (to reduce the effects of marijuana withdrawal). Taking drugs can become a very dangerous and expensive bad habit, yet no one talks about how expensive it is to quite. “Inpatient programs are more expensive than outpatient programs due to cost of room and board.
