Gun control is a very controversial topic especially in today's society; whether gun control is good or bad is a very talked about subject especially when it comes to the United States. This is a very touchy subject because guns are a part of a lot of people's daily lives. People that are anti gun control believe that no one should be able to put any restrictions on guns. They believe that people should be able to buy a firearm just like a pair of boots or a tool. They also believe that if you take firearms away from the law abiding citizens that just leaves firearms in the hands of people that don't abide by the law and leaves them defenseless. After this incident the President and others got together and discussed ideas to stop further violence like this from happening again and they came down to background checks. They decided to make a requirement for anyone who was to buy a firearm to go through a background check so people who are mentally ill, convicts and other people would not be able to get . In 1986, President Reagan signed the Firearm Owners Protection Act which eased the penalties from the 1968 gun control law, banned a federal registry of gun owners, and did not allow the ATF to inspect gun dealers. Also the Law Enforcement Officers Protection Act was put in place to prevent the manufacturing or importing of armor piercing rounds (often given the name of cop-killer bullets). In a Presidential address Ronald Reagan said this "I want to tell all of you here today something that I’m not sure you know. You do know that I’m a member of the NRA. My position on the right to bear arms is well known. But I want you to know something else. And I’m going to say it in clear unmistakable language. There was survey to figure out the gun ownership in 109 different countries called the Small Arms survey. The United States ranked number 1 with 88.8 per 100 people. Now the United nations office of Drug and Crime has a chart that ranks 192 countries by their homicide rates. Homicide is the deliberate and unlawful killing of one by another. Homicides in the United Kingdom seem very low because they only count the homicide if the a person is convicted of it. This can lead to a 15 percent decrease in their homicides thus making it seem lower than it actually is. The United States ranked at about 5.5 homicides per 100 people which is below average which is about 11 homicides per 100,000 people (Lott, John.). So no there is not always a direct connection between how many guns a country has and how many homicides a country
