“We managed to get everyone off safely even though it was total chaos. Only one injured person was on board - a young Afghan guy who the smuggler apparently tried to kill by throwing him headfirst into the fire yesterday. He was in quite a state with full thickness burns to most of his right hand and burns to his face. Just gives you an idea of the harsh world that these people have to deal with. Refugees tell me that smugglers have actually killed quite a few of the men and rape the women as well,” says Michael-John Von Hörsten, a volunteer doctor from South Africa.
