Throughout time, Lewis and Clark have been one of the most famous American explorers. The reasons Lewis and Clark were some of the greatest American explorers were that they found a way to the west coast, mapped the land past the Appalachian mountains, and they overcame many challenges and dangers along the way including bad weather, geographical, animals, insects, and native Americans.
Lewis and Clark weren't always known as America's great explorers. Lewis was actually Thomas Jefferson’s private secretary. When Jefferson asked him if he would like to lead an expedition west. With 50 full grown men they had to be careful of everything because they were entering unknown territory. One big obstacle was geographical, there weren't highways or speed boat. They had to travel by foot or for most of the journey they went up stream through the Mississippi. If that wasn't bad enough, they also had to deal with bad weather. The worst of all was mosquitos they stung anywhere, especially the face. They also had to deal with native Americans. Most of the encounters were hospitable where they would trade for supplies and have a place to relax and rest. While this was the case for most they did have a hostile encounter. With a group called the Blackfeet Indians no one from the expedition died, but they killed two of the Blackfeet. But they pushed on in hopes of surviving the harsh land
