Throughout their lives, people experience emotional and physical obstacles. There are a variety of ways to overcome these hardships, mostly categorized into wrong and right. Each individual has discovered what ways works well in way of achieving their desired outcomes. Or, in the very least, the requirements that must be met in order not to fail. The end results in overcoming a hardship may result in a better character, stronger mentalities, or the discovery of a natural inclination to surrender to fate. In the short story “God Is Not a Fish Inspector,” W.D. Valgardson exemplifies the qualities a person must have in order to successfully overcome an obstacle. Bergman struggles with the obstacle of not being in control of his life, thus losing his identity. As a 70 year-old-man, there are many things he has no influence over. He cannot control that he awakes every morning at exactly 3 o’clock. He cannot control the revocation of his fishing license, and he cannot control his daughter’s attempts to convert him. The things that he has sway in he asserts his dominance with glee. For the four years following the loss of his license, Bergman continues to fish. Everyday he matches wits against the fish inspectors and reigns victorious. Fishing is an integral part of his being and is one of the only things that still brings him joy. “The memory still brought back a feeling of pleasure and excitement.” (48) Just thinking of his accomplishments reminds Bergman of who he is and gives him the purpose to
