1. Deal out the cards into piles and hands. (one of each per player)
2. First player either play their cards into the center piles by playing an ace or a king or discards one on his bench. When it is his turn again, he must pick up so that his hand has 5 cards.
3. The player can play as many as he is able to from his hand and pile and if he uses all of his hand without discarding to his bench, he may pick up a new hand and resume play. They may also play from cards on their bench, but these must be played in order. They may only discard once and once they do this, it is the next players turn.
4. First to get rid of all their pile cards wins. They cannot discard their pile cards onto the bench.

Spite and Malice is a game of strategy and involves quick thinking as components of the game change with each players turn. In order to come up with a strategy, one must be paying attention and recognizing when there is a possible move on their turn. As well, judgment and problem solving are also needed to have an effective strategy. Due to the rules of the game, sequencing abilities is needed to be able to determine what step in the number sequence the cards are in, in order to play.
