During this massive year long battle the Nazis and the Soviets were at a stalemate this later coined the name the Eastern Front. One country would create a revolutionizing weapon the other would imitate said creation. But one weapon became a lasting icon on the Eastern Front - Schwerer Gustav. This translates to English as “Great Gustav”, and great it most certainly was. Gustav was known to be the biggest cannon the world had ever seen on the battlefield. According to Sean Martin, journalist from Express News, Gustav was, “a 1,350 ton machine and became the biggest weapon ever built and was capable of firing town leveling 10 ton shells more than 30 miles.” All in all the weapon was so powerful that Germany used it as a way to detonate Soviet underground ammunition caches that were as deep as 100 feet below the surface. Unfortunately as powerful as Gustav was, there was one problem, its mobility.
