Genre usually serves a purpose, and that purpose is to convey a certain message to a certain audience. For example, a literary narrative conveys a message of power gained from literacy and may be intended for a politically driven audience.
I came to these conclusions about genre by combining what I learned in class, in the textbook, and from my previous knowledge and experience. During class, we learned about three important questions: what is it, who reads it, and what’s it for. These questions help the reader to identify the audience, discover the writer’s intention, the kind of information being discussed, and helps to ultimately determine what genre the writing falls into. The textbook further elaborated and gave useful examples of different genres in writing, including every day genres such as text messages, tweets, and grocery lists. As soon as I had a fair amount of reading skill, I started to learn about genres such as nonfiction, fiction, fantasy, and romance. I also began to learn the names of the music genres I listened to, being mostly classical and pop at the time. As I got older my knowledge involving genre quickly expanded. I learned the names of and how to identify more genres in not only writing, but other areas as well. After joining this class and discovering the academic definition of genre and proven methods for identifying them, I was able to combine the knowledge I already knew with the new information I learned this year to form a more complete, well rounded definition of what genre
