Women have much more to gain in the battle for real and lasting equality. Currently women make only 77% of what men do for the same exact work. Also not many women in the world are like Claire Zachanassian from Ibsen’s The Visit. Women only account for 8.5% of the world’s billionaires. Why is it that women make less money than men even though they do the same work? A chart posted in the Washington Post details the amount of money a man makes versus a women (Source C). This chart is divided up by race. On average men make $10,000 more in a year than their female counterparts. The largest disparity between incomes comes in Asians where the man makes $13,000 more a year than the woman. Some may say that this is because their culture where women are accustomed to taking lower end jobs, but white males make $12,000 more than their white female counterparts. That’s only a $1000 difference. So saying that the disparities are due to culture is blatantly incorrect. Women do make less than men and people do not really know why. For some it may be being paid the same for the same work. For others it might be society not identifying choices a person makes as either feminine or masculine, but instead for every choice to be a neutral choice. For me, I believe that “real equality” is unachievable because two things can never be truly equal. Everything has unique pros and cons that make it original and individual. Men are genetically stronger and able to cope with harsh environments while women are physically able to feed children with breastmilk and are identified by the child as the mother, which an innate psychological response. This is not saying that women are caregivers and men are breadwinners, but physically they are prepared for that position (men more for ancient bread winning).
