When he was a child, he was diagnosed with dyslexia due to his lack of ability to take notes while listening, have difficulty for reading and spelling. Dyslexia is a learning disorder that alters the way the brain process writing materials, such as word recognition, spelling, and decoding. With this disorder, his life in school was harsh. He got bullied, looks down by teachers, and receiving harsh grades. He has trouble with spelling, writing, and grammar during his school year. Due to all the harsh treatment, he received by students and teachers, he kept silence. He kept as a secret for years and years because he afraid the way his readers, co-workers, and editors thinks about him. In 2003, the author, Dr.Sally Shaywitz published a book, Overcoming Dyslexia, inspired Gareth to be who he is, regardless of his disorder. It inspired him to write this essay for those who is diagnosed with this disorder. In his essay, he wrote, “...it’s never going to be easy. But put your heart into it and you will blow them away.” (Pg 159, 19). He believes that regardless if you are diagnosed with dyslexia or any kind of disorder, don’t be afraid of being who you are.
