Decolonization is the slow process of colonies gaining independence through several means with some being revolution and coup. Decolonization marked a dramatic change in the world’s political architecture. Millions of people were mobilized by nation-states triumphing over empires. Decolonization was also the signal of declining legitimacy of both empire and race as a credible basis for social life.
• Indian National Congress
The Indian National Congress (INC) or the Congress Party was the political expression of an all-Indian identity established in 1885. The party consisted of English Educated Hindu Elites in India. At an early age, Gandhi experienced racism for the first time and began organizing Indians to protest nonviolently. Satyagraha, which means truth force, was a nonviolent confrontational approach to politics. Gandhi eventually gained leadership in the INC and drew large crowds to mass campaigns. Gandhi appealed to India through his lifestyle and seemed to possess magical powers. Gandhi opposed modern industrial future for his country. Gandhi also sought to mobilize women for the struggle against Britain. Gandhi rejected modern industrialization completely.
• Muslim League
The All-India Muslim League was formed in 1906 and contradicted the INC’s claim to be the voice of all native Indians. The League demanded separate electorates with a fixed number of seats for Muslims. Due to Muslim’s being a minority in India, they feared their voices weren’t being heard. The leader of the Muslim League was Muhammad Ali Jinnah. They argued that parts of India with a Muslim Majority should have separate political status. From this separation emerged the country Pakistan meaning “land of the pure.”

The emphasis in this movement was on mobilizing women for the struggle. The Black Consciousness movement was supported by young people and in a town called Soweto where hundreds were killed. The people that followed the Black Consciousness movement and the ones that followed the ANC waged war against each other.
• military government
Military regimes were found in much of Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East. Military governments were established as military coups swept away the previous government and took control of the country while no one tried to stop them. The military intervened in at least thirty of Africa’s forty-six independent states. Almost all of the military governments were abandoned by 2000.
• Mozambique's civil war
Mozambique came under control of the party called the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique or (FRELIMO) after a 10-year struggle. FRELIMO came to power in a single-party Marxist-oriented state with strong communist support. Eventually a civil war erupted in 1977 which lasted 15 years due to weapons flowing into the country. 1 million + people were killed. RENAMO or Mozambique National Resistance was the opposing side of the civil war. After the civil war, amnesty was granted to everyone for crimes during the civil war. The civil war left many scars and left teenagers that were forced into participation
