A month after their divorce, Frida painted this self portrait, called “Self portrait with Cropped Hair”, after she cut all of her hair off. The lyrics at the top of the picture say, “Look, if I loved you it was because of you hair. Now that you are without hair, I don’t love you anymore.” Since Diego loved her long hair so much, she cut all of it off. Even though she painted this a month after her divorce, they got back together a year after.

In this painting, Frida is wearing a thorn necklace. You can see blood dripping down her neck as the thorns in her neck get deeper. By simply gazing at this painting, the first things noticeable are the characters it features; a black peasant man in white and, most likely, his wife in the red. It features him attempting to lift the weight of the flowers on his hands and knees with the support of his wife. The theme that comes to mind is that although the reader is able to see the flowers beauty, the man in the painting cannot, simply because he is more focused on lifting the weight rather than becoming mesmerized by the colors and feeling of the flowers. Because we are not lifting the weight, but simply admiring, it is easier for us to see the beauty in it rather than to fell all the hard work that is done to create that one thing. Another noticeable detail concerning the characters in the painting is the size. The man seems to be relatively smaller than the woman behind him, and he is the one that is being forced to carry the big basket of flowers.
“Agrarian Leader Zapata” was created in 1931 and dedicated to Emiliano Zapata (the first man in the white touching the horse) and all of the peasant farm workers that followed him during his revolt (the men behind him carrying the shovels).
