Chapter One Summary
Thoreau’s stated purpose in "Economy" is to explain why he moved into a tiny cabin near Waldon pond in Concord, Massachusetts. He's even more eager to describe how his two-year stay at Walden Pond helped him to live out his principles, which he talks about very much and in detail. This chapter covers the ways he survived. Thoreau doesn’t want to have a normal life and follow in the ways of society. "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation," Thoreau states, and argues that to get rid of this feeling, people should immediately simplify their lives and do what they think is right not society.
