When an illness, physical disability, poor health or medical condition begins to affect a child's potential to join in and contribute towards school life, it may have a big impact upon the child restricting their development opportunities. Often children who have health issues are less able to take part as much in some activities than other children. At first the child may be affected physically but in the long run it may also affect and damage the child/young persons social activities, for example team sports. This could also in turn affect the emotional development of the child because they may begin to feel pushed out of activities, making the child feel different and excluded. The child's emotional development can also be impacted, depending on the child's illness and needs. It is important that teachers and adults within establishments are fully aware of the child's circumstances and situation to enable them to support them by ensuring the child or young person is supported and included as much as possible.

To enable a child's speech and language to develop, hearing is critical. Therefore a child suffering from a hearing impairment may develop their vocabulary at a slower pace than a child with no hearing loss. In the case of a child or young person experiencing severe to profound hearing loss, they are more than likely to have feelings of isolation, lack of friendships with other peers and they may feel unhappy at school.
