An example of personification in this story is how each of the main characters represents a famous person in history. A few examples are Napoleon the pig represents Joseph Stalin, a former Russian General Secretary, and Snowball is like Leon Trotsky who was a Marxist revolutionary and theorist. Last we have the dogs who Napoleon took from their mother at a young age and then turns them into a little army which makes them like the Secret Police. (chapter 3) Orwell uses personification to tie this book to Russia and its history.
George Orwell’s Animal Farm clearly deserves its classic status. Orwell wove together literary elements and historical references. This book was both clever and entertaining. During the story, the animals take over the farm so that all animals can all be equal. Except towards the end of the book the rules change to, “All animals are equal but some are more equal than others.” (Orwell p.133) The ultimate irony of the story is that the pigs turned into the cruel rulers they rebelled against. And we are back at the beginning
