The Middle Ages occurred after the fall of Rome, caused by constant invasions. This system included the church, kings, nobles, knights, merchants and peasants. The church was the highest power because people believed that the church had power over their lives and afterlives, making them cherish the church. Kings were provided with knights by nobles in exchange for land. Nobels provided these knights with weapons. These knights offered merchants protection in exchange for goods that were produced by peasants who would often be rewarded with goods. According to document 3,”..they would raise armies to protect their own lands and fight for their lords”. This statement illustrates that feudalism was successful in providing a safer environment for Western Europe by using armies to protect the land and people.
