There are many types of family (Units) structures. Most families have two parents, but other families have only a single parent. In some families, grandparents raise their grandchildren. Yet, many other families are structured with stepchildren, foster children or adopted children. Whatever the family structure, a family should be a source of love and support for each other. However, this is not the case many times. Conflicts often arise within a family because of parental shortcomings, marital issues, disabilities, addictions, or even physical or mental illnesses.

In this family, the mother and the stepson appear to have a subtle friction between them. Overall, they relate well, but they often come into conflict needlessly. These conflicts appear to be driven by the stepson, as he harbors some resentment towards someone he does not consider his mother. While conducting the survey, there were a few alarming things noticed. For example, the husband and wife spared over his use of cigarettes indoors, and around the children. The husband was then regulated to the outdoors when smoking cigarettes. Also observed were prescription medications and over-the-counter (OTC) medications sitting in plain site and easily reached by the 8-month old baby who could ingest them. As an example, one pill was seen on the floor where the 8-month old baby was seen crawling around it. Furthermore, the house is not child proofed. There were no gates preventing the baby from gaining access to a kitchen storing house cleaning products, as well as having furniture with exposed sharp corners that could injure the child. Lastly, while speaking with the parents, they mentioned the baby sleeps with them in their bed in prone position. Because the parents sleep with heavy blankets, the child is at risk for suffocation. Additionally, because the baby sleeps between the mother and father, she is also at risk for crushing injuries if one of the parents rolls over on her. The parents mentioned that their previous 7-month old child died from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) inside the crib. The parents revealed that since then, they are scared of placing the 8-month old in the crib.
