The demand for APRNs is a growing one as hospitals are focusing on the sickest and unstable of patients leaving the bulk of health care services to be provided by community health centers, home health care, nurse managed clinics or birthing centers. There has been a push for APN’s, especially CRNA’s to obtain a doctorate level degree by the year 2025. Some states have regulations that allow nurse practitioners or clinical nurse midwives, prescribing authority without a physician’s supervision however, most do not. It is up to the federal government to help reform scope of practice laws. A future goal to help achieve this is to offer incentives for the adoption of best practice laws. NP’s and CNM’s are trained and educated to be full partners with other health care professionals due to their understanding of the healthcare continuum and their close relationship with patient care. The clinical nurse specialist role is one that has a great impact on healthcare as the CNS can provide care at a lower cost than physicians which helps to decrease the overall cost of care. The overall goal is to bridge the gap in access to healthcare. This can also help hospitals to achieve magnet status, meaning that the hospital has proven they provide the gold standard of nursing
