In the era of the 1950s, women were seen as innocent, pure, and modest figures. Makeup and hairstyles consistently attempted to help women achieve this look. By focusing on the eyes, and applying small amounts of eyeliner with large amounts of mascara, women were able to appear doe-eyed and more feminine. Women also wore pinks and red on their lips with small amounts of blush on their cheeks in an effort to emphasize femininity (Fernandez). The makeup fads of the 1950s clearly reflected a time of focus on innocence and girly appearances. With the makeup styles reflecting a simple and effortless approach to beauty, the popular hairstyles of the time reflect quite a different idea. The era featured a focus on wild hairstyles such as the poofy flip-up and the infamous and atrocious beehive (“History of Cosmetology”). These unruly hairstyles often made up for the conservative makeup and clothing that held a big position in the decade. In almost complete contrast, our trends today heavily emphasize makeup, and favor simpler hairstyles. The principles of makeup today include great contour, matte looks, thick brows, smokey eyes, and highlight (“2010s in Fashion”). With more products, companies, and focus on the media, the popularity of makeup and cosmetics has increased substantially. Due to the large emphasis on makeup, hairstyles have taken a step back and become much simpler. Popular hairdos of the 2010s highlight straight or wavy hair, bangs, short hairstyles, buns, and multi-colored hair (“2010s in Fashion”). The hairstyles of today reflect the fact that we focus more on makeup and clothing rather than hair.
