The deli owner, Ari, tells the officer his sandwich is on the house and that he does not need to pay. In this scenario, the police officer would be wrong and would violate ethics and professionalism if he accepted the free sandwich. Furthermore, if the police officer accepts gratuity the probability of presenting future problems exist. Each police department has a code of ethics and professional conduct police officer follow, and not excepting gratuity is a part of that ethics code. In some police departments, ethics and professionalism is synonymous in definition. Accepting benefits from citizens, the officer is in a situation where the person offering the gratuity may want something in return later. To illustrate, several officers received free meals at a local restaurant and the owner takes down names, dates and prices of meals tendered in a journal. The owner does this because months earlier his son was charged for driving while under the influence and was attempting to get his son out of the charge (Grossi, D, 2009). The United States Navy shares these same core values with law enforcement agencies throughout the America. Based on my discoveries of professionalism and ethics in the criminal justice system law enforcement officers are best in line with my moral beliefs. I would chose a career field in law enforcement because of the high degree of integrity and professionalism officers display under adversity.
