“You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock”(Fitzgerald 98). This famous quote is one of many ways that F. Scott Fitzgerald used colors in his popular novel The Great Gatsby. Color symbolism is a branch of the Archetypal lense that uses colors to describe different people and their personalities throughout literature. Colors, including green, yellow, white, and red are used to symbolise hope, caution, innocence, and anger through what people see, the cars they drive, what they wear, and how they live in the Great Gatsby. The color green is very important to the novel, representing hope, the future, and new life. Typically when people think of the color white they think of purity and innocence, like weddings and snow. In The Great Gatsby white is attached to characters like Daisy and Jordan who are not pure or innocent in their lives, their work, or their love, but that's how they are shown on the outside. “They were both in white and their dresses were rippling and fluttering as if they had just been blown back in after a short flight around the house.” (12). Later the girls are shown in white again, “Daisy and jordan lay upon an enormous couch, like silver idols, weighing down their own white dresses against the singing breeze of the fans.” (122). In both of these quotes the girls are shown to be very delicate, they are not shown in a way that mirrors their personality. Nick is very clear about Jordan’s dishonesty and blatantly says that “She was incurably dishonest. She wasn’t able to endure being at a disadvantage…”(63). Nick knows that Jordan is a cheater and a liar but he still chooses to spend time with her, this could be due to her pure appearance. While Jorden is lying and cheating in her life, Daisy cheats in her love by being with Gatsby. Tom, Daisy’s husband, says “I suppose the latest thing is to sit back and let Mr. Nobody from Nowhere make love to your wife.” (137).Later, after this Tom lets Daisy drive home with Gatsby, “Go on, He won’t annoy you. I think he realizes that his presumptuous little …show more content…

His use of literary devices, ranging from symbolism to metaphors to similes, coordinate into an enchanting tale that on a deeper level deals with the destructiveness of American materialism and greed. Fitzgerald’s language is rich and dense, but once dissected, reveals a criticism of and disillusionment with the American Dream and what it means to be discontent in a world where material items so often equate to happiness. Color symbolism is a major element of the narrative, and Fitzgerald subtly fuses it into nearly every scene to create a well-painted world with deeper meaning into what is really occurring between characters.
