For example, one of my best friends was molested in elementary school by her father. A man that she was supposed to have the utmost respect and trust for. Her parents were not together but shared custody. He’d take care of her and her other siblings on the weekends. One day she was having an innocent conversation with her grandmother, just sharing information about what happens at daddy’s house. But the weekend visits stopped after that conversation. She was in the fourth grade at the time and was too young to understand. Throughout the next ten years, she remembered who her dad and her siblings were but didn’t quite understand why they were no longer in her life. At the age of 18 she graduated High School early and was working full-time. One day at work she started thinking about her father and memories started to click and come together. She remembered everything! She quietly clocked out of work and went into the bathroom and broke down. She remembered the nights he’d take her to an empty parking lot and take advantage of her. She remembered her siblings banging on the locked room door while she was in the room with her father and how she was incapable of defending herself. Moral to the story is that Repressed Memories are real. You can be so afraid of confronting your own thoughts that it’s easier to lock them away and throw away the key. Past
