There are so many diseases in the world nowadays. Every day doctors and pathologists find out a new disorder that may afflict living organisms. Although there are hundreds of thousands of diseases around the world, Mad Cow Disease is unique among them. According to Health and Science Research Blog, a study in 1992 says that there were about 37 thousands cases of Mad Cow Disease reported around the world, but this high number decreased to 29 cases in 2011. Interestingly, many people ask themselves what exactly Mad Cow Disease is. Most people define Mad Cow Disease generally as "a disease that infects the nervous system of a cow and makes it mad." They do not get BSE, but there is another version for humans that is known as Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD). It is uncommon condition of Dementia, a general term that describes symptoms affecting thinking skills and memory. A human may get vCJD if he or she eats nerve tissue of a cow that had been infected with BSE before it was slaughtered. This infection was first discovered in the 1920s by 2 neuroscientists from Germany, Hans Gerhard Creutzfeldt and Alphons Maria Jakob. There was a female patient suffering from neurological abnormalities, and they noticed that her brain had lost most of its nerve cells. According to World Health Organization, this loss in nerve cells can occur anywhere around the world, 229 vCJD cases have been reported in 12 countries since 1996, and unfortunately, Saudi Arabia is one of them. There are various symptoms of Mad Cow Disease, but nobody can notice that from the beginning of this condition. It occasionally takes more than 4 years from the time when a cow got BSE to show some symptoms. This is known as the incubation period. A common sign of Mad Cow Disease is incoordination. An infected cow usually has trouble getting up and walking. Moreover, an infected cow act very violent or anxious, and that is why BSE is known as "Mad Cow Disease."
