Soon after their independence from Britain, Sudan was plunged into two major civil wars. These wars consumed many of the land’s resources, and people became worried. Competition for these resources became a real issue, especially after nomads started running out of land to use. People began to fight over land. The disputes became increasingly more difficult to solve traditionally and peacefully, and soon weapons were used to solve them instead. The people of the Sudan government began looking to Darfur for new resources.
The Janjaweed group, a militia in Darfur, heard about the surplus of resources in Darfur and became interested in the land. Many peace talks had been made, but most had failed until the most successful talk was made in 2005. Leading to the Darfur Peace Agreement being signed in 2006, an agreement that is supposed to help bring an end to the Darfur Conflict. The agreement allowed troops to come in and help the Sudanese armed forces protect the people in Darfur. It also took away the weapons from the Janjaweed and other similar militias.
