As adults in positions of responsibility, acting in ‘loco parentis’, a level of awareness must used for protecting children and young people from harm, as we have taken over responsibility from their parents hike they are in our care, this relates to all contexts, from health and safety issues to those around safeguarding, internet safety and safety on school trips.

It is important that those who are concerned about issues around safeguarding should be able to report them, for example; a head teacher has a good relationship with a family whose child attends their school. Some members of staff have reported abuse of neglect concerning the child to the headteacher. The headteacher brushes off the issue replying ‘I’ve known this family for years, they would never abuse their child’, the neglect continues and the child becomes isolated from other children because of their bad smelling clothes. The practitioner acts in good faith and takes the matter to the local child services and the case is investigated and the members of staff who reported the child neglect are protected from bullying and disciplined. Reporting a safeguarding issue should be done confidentially and no concerns for any repercussions towards the individual who reported the incident or those whose practice is being questioned, this process is otherwise known as whistleblowing.
