When the poor are perceived as lazy it causes people not to help the people. On the other hand when poor people are perceived as oppressed people lend helping hands. When Congress spends millions of dollars to other factors than helping the poor change is needed. Poverty is very prevalent in American society and it could impact our nation’s future.
If poor people are perceived as lazy it causes people not to want to help the people. With the thoughts I worked hard for my money and why should I give my money to a person who will probably not use the money for what they claim it is for and will use the money for drugs and alcohol. People also think if they help the perceived lazy poor that they will get dependent on the help and will never get back on their feet so to speak. Also people do not believe the perceived lazy poor are in as desperate need as they claim to be. Furthermore, people think the perceived lazy poor should find better jobs so they will not remain poor.
When the poor are viewed as oppressed people tend to try to lend a helping hand. Which causes people to help the poor out of their situations especially during the holiday season

Poverty in America is a real issue, and the way we portray it is all wrong. The essay "Changing the Face of Poverty" written by Diana George talks about the problems of how nonprofits misrepresent the face of poverty in America. Most organizations put out flyers and adds that make the needy look like there from the depression era with rags and dirt smudges covering their faces. This is not a true representation of what poverty looks like in America. Most people think that the poor are easy to point out because of what they have seen in advertisements.…

The automatic response to poverty is the desire to help those who need it. To give them homes and money so that they can keep their family afloat. This idea of giving people facing poverty, money and other necessities is the basis of the American Welfare System. The Welfare System is made up of many parts that provides money for those with work injury, illness, old-age, death benefits to survivors, and maternity coverage as well as those completely outside of the labor force (Welfare). With 8.4 million people in America who cannot find jobs, it makes sense for some sort of system to be in place (Tanner).…

While I respect your opinion, there are contradictions in your statements. How can you claim poor people are lazy when you said: " I have family who came from nothing and ended up owning a business and becoming successful, so I know that it is possible. " If you claim your family came from nothing their initial ascribe status indicates they were poor through no fault of their own. Which proves there are many people that are born into poverty. Additionally, the issues impacting poverty can be rooted in environmental racism, gender inequality, ageism, psychological, and physical disabilities which may limit an individual's resources and ability to function within society.…

A large portion of the public does not understand why people live in poverty, and believe it is because they do not work hard enough; but this is simply not true. There are countless causes of poverty that people do not often recognize such as, inadequate job opportunities (especially in inner cities), lack of education, being raised in poverty as a child, mental and physical illness or disease, and many others. Poverty is often the root to other social problems as well such as crime, drugs, and the prison system, to just name a few. People or families who are living in poverty and do not have enough money to survive often turn to crime because they see no other options. With a lack of jobs in inner cities, there are often no way for these people to make enough money to eat other than selling drugs.…

World Free of Poverty Possible? A world free of poverty is like a perfect dream come true, but is this dream actually possible for us, I would have to say no to that. I believe that as human beings regardless what country we live in, we have given our individual governments enough power that they now have brainwashed us to think all of the important issues we need to fix require lots of time, money and effort which makes it inconvenient for us all. I also, believe that the issue of poverty is a topic that we think we are educated in and exposed to, however I believe we have not fully educated or exposed ourselves to it as much as we think we have.…
