Improved Essays
The Elderly Nutrition Program was a very effective program that addressed issues such as nutrition, health -related, and supportive services to a population that needed these problems addressed. It reaches three million older persons annually, on the national level, which is an about 7% of the older population. The program achieved the primary outcomes of Congress which led to an overall better health of the older people’s population. Participants were better nourished, increased their levels of socialization in ambulatory and homebound settings, and decreased nutrition risk while being cost efficient. Also the ENP did not really compare to other programs because in the past the programs were not as successful as the ENP.

For people to make healthier food choices, healthier food options must be made accessible. The minority families of this community who have a lower income have less access to healthier food and beverages as well as less access to outdoor facilities. The people of this community are creatures of habit they will continue to habitually eat poorly and not exercise until there is a concerted effort to break habits and ensure access to affordable options. My goal for improvement is to help create access as well as accessibility for this to happen.…

One way to determine if this program is successful is for clients to complete surveys which are inexpensive and easy. Elderly clients can write down how much water they consumed before additional water was being included with their meals, offered during the day, and taken home with them in the evening and then during the program to see if their consumption or intake has increased. The results of the surveys can be used to determine if this program is effective at getting elderly clients to drink more water. With the help of adult daycare employees “Healthy Hydration” can reduce the amount of hospital stays and help older people successfully age in place by taking a proactive approach to preventing dehydration in elderly…

For example, Deierlein et al. (2014) find Hispanic and Black elderly have the highest intakes of fats, sodium, and added sugars. Additionally, they find elderly individuals who are married have increased rates of consumption of nutrient rich foods. Black non-Hispanic elderly consume the lowest amounts of nutrient-rich foods, with increases in consumption of saturated fats and sodium (Storey & Anderson,…

History tells a story about a time that the hospital, LTC system and mental health were all connected to one another and were all serviced in the same manner. Well, maybe there wasn’t really a hospital, nursing home or asylum so to speak of but there were people who had conditions or were poor and could not take care of themselves which resulted in a need which brought life to the health care facilities and models of care that we recognize today. Early in American history, few people lived to be old, but for those who did, “old-age security” meant having children or property. The public welfare system of those times was fashioned after the English “poor Laws”. Early on, paupers were given cash payments referred to as “outdoor relief”.…

This essay will evaluate the evidence base for the importance of patient nutrition within adult nursing. As stated within the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) code (2015) nurses must “deliver the fundamentals of care effectively”. This refers to the integral components of nursing, for instance nutrition and hydration, being monitored and kept to adequate levels as it can improve a patient’s overall recovery, as discussed by Brady, McCabe and McCann (2013). This essay will cover the methods used to assess and maintain nutrition, the importance of nutrition and the consequences of malnutrition. Evidence-based practice involves the use of the best evidence available to “justify the rationales for practice” as stated by Dougherty, Lister and…

Elderly population can be divided into groups, including the functional elderly, the frail elderly and those with chronic diseases. Each of these groups has specific nutritional requirement. Several factors have to be taken into account when creating a diet for these people, including, age, gender, living conditions, mental and physical state, the medications they may need to take, and social support. The functional elderly are likely to have nutrient needs that do not vary markedly, except for a few nutrients, from those of the healthy younger population. My personal view regarding the policy is that one of the key reasons for the enactment of this policy is that kids will grow and develop to become healthy adults. This is a bi- partisan legislation and the USDA has ruled out regulations with regards to food choices and caloric intake ensuring that meals served to kids will be healthy nutritious and portioned sizes to age requirements. For these and all other reasons discussed it is evident that there have been developmental issues with relations to the becoming adults, choices that are being made and the devastating effects of not paying attention to chronological age, needs at the time and the effects of lack of needs being met in growth, human development, mental development, psychological development, social development and moral development. Children will be given a better opportunity to education which will affect their growth and development.…

I have also spent time with older adults who are determined to live out their years in their own home despite chronic pain, disease and social isolation and finally I have worked with older adults living in aged care facilities who have multiple conditions, prescribed multiple medications…
