Effective Communication starts with the construction and preservation of virtuous operational interactions (Henderson, 2015). Effective Communication is an essential skill which is vital to be successful and is desirable or needed to develop good working relationships (Roberts, 2011). This is displayed by an individual having an awareness and understanding of the manner to which they influence people that they come in contact with (O'Toole, 2012, p.48). This is further displayed by having an awareness and understanding of the influences that these people have on the individual (O'Toole, 2012, p.48). To achieve effective communication being aware of the ‘self’ will gain insight into how the personality and communication styles can impact on interactions (O'Toole, 2012, p.48). Reflection can aid to promote an understanding of these processes, by facilitating a change in the person’s thoughts and actions to the positive. This facilitation is instrumental in ongoing professional development which leads to skill development and creates effective communication. Reflection also assists with avoiding regret and guilt, provides an understanding and helps with acceptance and forgiveness (O'Toole, 2012, p.48).
