A momentous victory of the African American populist, as they can now vote without any barriers. But why did this happen? And why is it important to you? Before the act, African Americans, especially in the Southern United States, could not vote without problems with the local whites. Though they was constitutionally allowed to vote, the governor's found ways to bypass the constitution. After the Civil War, the Black Codes was made to limit or simply prevent African Americans from voting. These code prevent blacks from voting by imposing a literacy test or a poll tax, which most blacks could not pass one or the other. And with the KKK, intimidation, murder, and arson was only some of the ways they suppressor blacks rights. But the African Americans had enough of this and soon protested against these injustices. This was only one of the propellants of the civil right movement. After heavy protest, the current president, Lyndon B. Johnson, signed the Voting Act of 1965, in 1965. This law made it illegal to impose voting taxes, literacy tests, and intimidation during elections, local, states and federal levels. So why is it important to you? Image if you could not vote due to a $100 dollar fine, or if the test ask you to define parallel dimensions. Not fair right?
