Since there are many reasons as to why domestic violence is present, the type of interventions available can be endless. The main intervention used for domestic violence is counseling, with the use of the Duluth Model (Domestic Abuse Intervention Project) to reduce domestic violence against women (Haugen, 2005). The Duluth Model has been used to help communities eliminate domestic violence. The Duluth Model is divided into eight sections which helps individuals understand patterns of abusive behavior. The goal of the wheel is to convince men to use nonviolent approaches as opposed to the violent acts that have been used and allows them to see the patterns of domestic violence as opposed to isolated acts (Haugen, 2005). Another intervention that is used is couple’s counseling. The couples counseling program is a family based “treatment” that addresses violence against women as the primary problem of relationships.
