There is very little coverage for distracted driving, most of the focus is on impaired driving, even though the facts say that driving with distraction is far worse and common compared to driving under the influence. There are many campaigns that support the fight against driving under the influence, while there is very little for distracted driving. The study concluded that drivers that text took longer to brake, were speeding and used less braking force, and had more accidents than drunk drivers. The study also concludes that distracted driving poses a greater risk to other drivers than drunk driving, while it is mostly younger drivers that commit distracted driving compared to older drivers which who are the majority of drivers. Even the CAA claims that “Canadians say that texting while driving is the biggest threat to their personal safety on the road, above impaired driving and speeding” (CAA, 2016) and another statistic from the CAA says “80% of collisions and 65% of near crashes have some form of driver inattention as contributing factors”. (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2010). If distracted driving is more common than drunk driving and has proven more dangerous, it should have a higher penalty when drivers violate this
