Eastern parents are not authoritative, but are described as authoritarian. This type of parenting lacks in showing comfort and support towards the child, although little affection is shown. This type of style is set as being high on expectations towards the child education and success. Having said that children do not have the freedom to have a say in what the child likes are, instead the parent is the one who chooses what the child should do. A high level of maturity is expected from the children regardless of being young. For having these types of parents children must be respectful and obedient to the parents. In this case the parents are always considered right and there is no such thing as crossing the boundaries or even negotiating. Western and Eastern parenting besides the differences also share some common similarities. Although the concerns that the parents have towards their children are shown differently the parents still care very well for their children. Both deal with the consequences faced in education and want their children to succeed. And also certain expectations and responsibilities. Chua points how point out that when it comes to the level of strictness Western parents are not even as like the Chinese parent. Chua also goes to mention, “Chinese parents spend approximately 10 times as long everyday drilling academic activities with their children.” The Chinese parent focuses a lot of their time in guiding the child to make sure of going through the right path. And the Western parent worry more for how their child is feeling. Despite the obvious reasons of the differences between the two different parenting styles, both parents in some ways are the same in some certain situations. For example, even though one might show more concern for the child education, both still show concern.
