Even though, Michael and his sister Melany have some years apart, he likes to play with her a lot. Melany is a sweet girl who is taking 3rd grade in a classroom for gifted children. The meal time at night is performed by all family members sitting around the table; they always pray before every meal. They are very close family. They help each other to meet basic families function, for example, Michael’s mom deals with children homework while Michael’s father helps drooping children off at school. So, they have a strong emotional bonding between all of the family members.
The observation was performed in The Tropical Park, a Saturday morning around 10:00 am. We went to one of the playgrounds which are covered with a large tent and there are a sand box, trampoline, three different slides, a monkey bar and two pair of swings. Michael’s mother said that Michael loves outdoors activities, so every other weekend she brings him to this park. “Here he can run, jump, play baseball and interact with other children” she said. This stage is when children begin to construct things and become more confident. Michael was able to construct the robot with the Legos pieces. Michael falls under the secure category of attachment. According to Bowlby & Ainsworth theory of attachment children are classified in these categories based on the response they gave when they reunite with their mothers after a separation (Mandich, 2015). Secure attached children are upset when their mother leaves and happy to see her when she returns (Mandich, 2015). When Michael left the restroom and saw that his mother was walking away from him and started cry, but then when she came back, he stop cry. After complete the observation on Michael’s developmental milestones while he was engage on playing activities allows me better understanding of human developing through the life span. I could see how the environment, as well as biological, physical, psychosocial and cognitive functions can affects person development in positive or negative way. This observation also provides me, as a future occupational therapy practitioner, with better ideas and tools of how to assess clients based on the knowledge of the different theories and its relationship with human
