Growing up in Strawberry Plains was simple, only two basic roads exits; Strawplains Pike and Andrew Johnson Highway. Everyone knows you and plus you’re likely related to them. I did not leave Strawplains Pike until I obtained my license at sixteen and started attending church on Broadway. Going to Broadway, exposed me to people who did not understand me and “city living.”

I have three siblings, however, I have only lived in the same house as one of them. A twenty-four age difference stands between my eldest sibling and me. Meaning, as I was growing up so were my nieces and nephew, causing me to gain the title aunt at birth. Many people ask me why my siblings and I share such an age difference and I simply respond, “I am a mix of antibiotics and birth control.” Both of my parents were divorced previous to meeting one another, my father had three kids with his first wife and my mother did not have any kids. They married when she was thirty-eight and he forty-seven, not expecting any children together. When my father found out about my mother’s pregnancy, he went berserk. My biggest influence would be my mother who has taught me self-respect, independence, and compassion. She goes through her day making others feel loved and cared for, even when she feels she’s not. Her compassion for others is remarkable and her work ethic is impeccable, she has taught me to hold a smile and depend on no one, except
