Courage is something everyone has, whether they like it or not. People also use it everyday. Even when someone is doing something as trivial as walking down the street, they are being courageous because there is a risk of a piano falling on their head. No matter how unlikely that will ever happen is, it is still courageous. Everyone who has ever been on this earth has been courageous at some point in their lives, and it is amazing what some people can do.
There are many people that can define courage many different ways, and most of these people are right. Bravery is doing something without thinking through what risks are involved with do it, but courage is knowing all of the risks that are involved with doing something, but do it anyway. There are many examples of courage all around everywhere. For instance, people in the military are very courageous. They go into a conflict, facing bullets, explosives, and attacks every minute they are there. For example, Atticus is very courageous throughout the book. When he is asked to defend a black man named Tom Robinson that is accused of raping a young woman, he accepts. Atticus receives a lot of heat for being his lawyer, and most of the town does not like the idea of helping a negro. In the book, Scout asks, “Atticus, are we going to win?” Atticus responds, “No, honey.” (Page 101) Atticus knows that Tom is going to lose the case. Atticus still chooses to fight for Tom so that slim hope that Tom will change the ideas of the people of Maycomb county that all black people are awful. Alsos, Mrs. Dubose acts courageous as well. She was dying, and she was in a lot of pain. She was a morphine addict, but she wanted to be free of it before she passed away. “She said she was going to leave this world beholden to nothing and nobody. Jem, when you’re sick as she was, it’s all right to take anything to make it easier, but it wasn’t all right for her. She said she meant to break herself of it before she died, and that’s what she did,” said Atticus about Mrs. Dubose (Page 148). This is courageous because she did not want to die an addict, but she still was in a lot of pain. The risks were that she would be in lots of pain, but she didn’t care, She set a goal for herself, and she accomplished it. For her, the reward of not being an addict was greater than the risks of her being in pain. Atticus, as well as Mrs. Dubose
