The next year I moved up from the elementary school to the middle school. Before then I have never done any sports in my school. But in the fall of my 7th grade year I decided to join the cross country team. I never knew what got into me but I just had a sudden desire to run. I regretted that desire because the sport was exhausting, and it made everything hurt. I vowed that I would never put myself through that terror again, and I kept that promise. In my eighth grade year I joined the swim team. I was a skilled swimmer, and it seemed to fit me a lot more since we have a pool at home and I have been swimming since I could walk and I loved it. I succeeded at swimming and continued to swim throughout the duration of my high school career. Also …show more content…
Every girl for their senior year at Kristie Wright School of Dance had to do a solo dance. I had to sign up to take extra classes, and also pay one hundred dollars to my teacher. The money I had to pay was for the choreography and costume. And also all of the time that she put into my solo dance for me. For my dance I chose the song “Alaska” by Maggie Rogers, the choreography that my teacher did for me was beautiful and very graceful. And my costume was a light pink dress with gold shimmer. The dance was a version of a lyrical and also contemporary. At the end of the night she gave me an envelope with money for food in college, and also a book on classic ballet techniques, so I would never forget the art (like I would anyway). We hugged and cried together and said our goodbyes. I went and hugged my best friend Emily, and said that I would see her soon, because we would be roommates in college. I said my farewells to the rest of my …show more content…

We are only friends. I press to that fact, but still my heart beats a hundred times faster as we dance together. We had spent quite some time choreographing this dance together and here we are: the steps running into a well-rehearsed picture, the artists are us. As part of an old high school tradition, hundreds of students crowded into a dimly lit cafeteria and danced until the air hung heavy and sweat glistened off every square inch of exposed skin. The schools that began the tradition of the modern homecoming dance most likely did not expect it to evolve into what it is today; at some point, we, as students, lost the true purpose of the event and instead became preoccupied with image. Even though I would have liked to think that those things did not matter, I still found myself altering my appearance that Saturday night to try and show off the best version of myself. I was not alone; other females joined me amidst a pile of cosmetic products and styling tools, and we had the pictures to showcase…

“Blood, sweat, and chalk; never tears.” These words have guided my gymnastics career throughout high school. Pretty much starting from the beginning, I had to re-learn many skills and tricks that I had lost after quitting gymnastics for dance lessons in fifth grade instead of joining the competitive team. I lived for gymnastics and I still do. Walking into the gym always boosts my mood and gives me a rush of determination.…

The Lesson in Quitting For the past 7 years of my life, swimming has played a huge role. Growing up, I had always enjoyed being in the water, and was one of the odd kids that genuinely enjoyed swimming lessons, no bribes required (thinking about it, I wish I had some of those kids in the lessons I teach now). Overtime, it began to feel less like a passion and more like an obligation; something I had committed to that was too late to stop. I was afraid to quit, afraid to disappoint, and trying to be dedicated to a sport I had lost interest in made me start to hate it. This year, I finally decided to drop the sport, and am now embracing the huge change it has had in my life.…

In dance, you learn quickly that without pure dedication and drive you will never be successful. While talent can come naturally, skill and technique only come with hard work. I spent countless hours in dance studios growing up, working tirelessly to hone these skills and perfect technique. A lifetime of dance taught me what it means to have discipline and dedication to a craft, values which I have also seen reflected in my clinical experiences. Medicine is a practice which calls for just as much discipline, dedication, and drive.…

Before a performance, my friends and I would be very superstitious. Often, we'd each have a small procedure we'd go through to calm our restlessness. I still remember the aroma of oranges and lemons that my friend, Mya, scented her pointe shoes with. She would put these miniature cushions in her shoes for every recital because the fragrance would always calm her nerves, and she "abhors the stench of smelly feet" so that's another reason there. Mine, while it wasn't as lavishing, it did its justice.…

From my last year of study, there has not been much that has changed from my perception of ballet. So far, I noticed that I made progress in improving my technique as well as having a clearer focus while learning the combinations in class. I want to improve in whatever way possible to make sure that I can keep on top of my technique, especially since I look forward to striving forward through this semester as a continuation of last semester. On the first day back of the new semester, I already knew that I wanted to break some of the bad habits that I had and wanted to find any way possible to make the goals a primary focus. Even though I have my strengths and weaknesses, I want to further myself this semester to grow as a dancer by breaking some old habits that are holding me back.…

I hope that fixing my pelvis can allow me to use more of my rotation and turn out. I also want to improve the use of my rotators and turn out muscles, without gripping my glutes or quads.…
