The Dallas Independent School District was established in the year 1884, which consisted of six segregated schools at the time. Today the DISD has grown to two-hundred and thirty schools, is the second largest district in Texas, and the twelfth in the United States. Since the district serves about 150,000 students, there has to be some type of dress code enforcement, just liked any other educational institute.
Pre-K- 8th Grade Uniform Dress Code
School uniforms for the Dallas independent school district were put into effect in the year 2005. Uniforms are enforced for elementary and middle school students. Dress codes in the DISD are communicated by enrollment packets that are given to students at the beginning of the year and on the DISD website under code of conduct-dress code. Uniform guidelines specify that you must wear solid khaki, navy blue, or black for the bottom and white for the top. All shirts, blouses, turtleneck, or polo-style shirts must have collars. From the districts point of view, they see uniforms as being less of a distraction for students. They don’t want them to place their focus on their social appearances, and get distracted on who is wearing name brand clothing and who is dressed better. The district wants students to attend school and concentrate on their academics. Statistics show that uniforms have had a positive effect on school campuses. For instance, campuses have reported a decline in student’s tardiness, suspensions, amd disciplined referrals. There is even evidence that uniforms have increased pride and unity amongst students. A decline in violence has also been the result from uniforms, because there is no gang identifying colors incorporated into the student dress
