Culturally relevant pedagogy is a term that is used to describe an approach of teaching where the teacher makes connections between students’ home culture and the school cultural life, while still complying with the curriculum requirements of the state and school. Also described as “the pedagogy that empowers students intellectually, socially, emotionally, and politically by using cultural referents to impart knowledge, skills, and attitudes.” (learnnc.org, p. 1). This approach uses the student’s ethnic background and experiences to interweave in the teacher’s lessons. It is because of students diverse cultural that the nation’s education system must be prepared to teach those with different ethnicity and language skills. Cultural Relevant Pedagogy (CRP) is composed of three principles; 1.experience academic success, 2.maintaining cultural competence, and 3. development that students are required to develop consciousness so they can challenge the status quo of their social life. Most part of immigrant communities lack english language knowledge and are categorized as ELL students. The number of English Language learners is rising and is expected to continue it’s growth within the next decades.With the increment of ELL population, learning has become a process that reflects in their emotional and cultural experience. When teaching these students, it is critical to comprehend their culture in order to provide relevant tools that will fulfill their needs. There is a current gap between English Language Learners and the English speaking peers. Much of this academic gap is found in the ELL population due to lack of cultural comprehension between the school and the students’ culture. In order to close this gap, multicultural “scholars such as Echevarria, Vogt & Short, (2008), and Ladson Billings (1992), promote culturally relevant or responsive pedagogy as a way to solve our currently failing education system” (archives.evergreen,p.7). Students’ backgrounds and prior cultural experience would need to be matched with the academic material for comprehensible education to take place. It is taken into account that cultural relevance and culturally relevant characteristics support the educational needs of ELL learners.
