Gloria Estefan said, “I am trying to teach my children to feel a responsibility for their fellow human being and a sense of connection with…the world around them.” To me, that is what being Hispanic is about. It is about breaking down the walls many in my culture live within and getting to know—and be a part of—what lies outside of those walls: the people and the rest of the world. My first year of high school, I remember sitting with my group of friends, talking and laughing and having a good time, when a teacher surprised me by thanking me. There are many symbols that can represent my race and ethnicity, but the one that represents it the most is my quinceñera dress. Every young woman’s dress is made to fit their style, which means every quince dress is different unless they order it from a catalog, and don’t get it customized to suit their style. I got my dress custom made just for me in Tulare, California which is around three hours away from where I live, Salinas, California.…
