The topic I personally feel was very eye-opening, and most meaningful was cultural diversity. This particular topic was not directly covered in class however, it was included in the book and briefly touched upon in our group presentation. Cultural awareness plays an extremely important role in reducing health disparities, and helps nurses understand the needs of a diverse group of individuals. While doing research for our group presentation, I discovered a lot of information in our book which focused mainly on cultural diversity and nursing. Even though I am Caucasian, I have always been aware of prejudice and biases because I am an immigrant and often looked down upon. Most people would assume that I would never be discriminated against

Our book states that the United States has traditionally been considered a melting pot of diverse cultures (Nursing Now). According to research conducted by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), more than one-third of the U.S. population is comprised of people from ethnic and racial minority groups, and by 2043, minority groups will become the majority (AACN,2016). Throughout my research for my group project, I learned so much about the importance of being culturally aware as a medical professional. I was surprised to learn that countless minorities have reported lower levels of satisfaction when receiving health care, and thought they would receive better care if they were of a different race or ethnicity. Studies have shown that cultural barriers are a massive reason individuals chose not to seek medical help from health care professionals. In this course, and throughout nursing school we were taught about the significance of ethics and cultural diversity and, it makes me very upset the see that people feel so mistreated be medical
